The process involves printing with water-based pigment inks and a key ingredient: a thermoplastic adhesive powder. The DTF Process: A Step-by-Step Breakdown

The journey from a digital file to a finished garment involves four key phases:

1. Preparation and Printing

The process begins on a computer, where the design is created and then mirrored (flipped horizontally). This mirrored image is sent to a DTF printer, which first lays down a layer of white ink onto a clear PET film, followed by the CMYK color inks. Printing the white base first is crucial, as it ensures the design's vibrancy on dark-colored fabrics.

2. Applying the Adhesive Powder

Immediately after printing, while the ink is still wet, the film moves to a powdering station. Here, a thermoplastic adhesive powder (often called "shaker powder") is evenly distributed across the entire printed area. The powder selectively sticks only to the wet ink. Any excess is then shaken off and recycled, leaving a fine layer of adhesive only on the design.

3. Curing the Transfer

The powdered film then enters a curing oven or tunnel. The heat serves two critical functions:

● It thoroughly dries and solidifies the inks.

● It melts the adhesive powder, fusing it with the ink to create a single, flexible, and solid transfer layer on the film.

At this point, the transfer is complete and can be stored for later use or applied immediately.

4. Heat Pressing and Finishing

The final step bonds the transfer to the garment:

● The fabric is pre-pressed to remove moisture and wrinkles.

● The DTF transfer is placed face-down onto the garment.

● A heat press applies high temperature and pressure for a short time (typically 10-20 seconds). This re-melts the adhesive, allowing it to penetrate the fabric fibers.

● After a brief cooling period, the PET film is peeled away, revealing a vibrant, soft, and durable print permanently bonded to the material.
